About Separately

Clarity about where you stand, before you spend on legal advice.

info

Separately is an Australian property settlement assessment tool that produces a structured, personalised estimate of how a couple's asset pool is likely to be divided under the Family Law Act 1975, for both married and de facto couples. It is a preparation tool, not a law firm, and it does not provide legal advice.

What Separately is

Separately helps people who are separating or divorcing in Australia understand their likely property settlement before they engage a lawyer or walk into mediation. You answer guided questions about your assets, debts, superannuation, contributions, and caregiving over about 30 minutes, and you receive a detailed report that estimates how the pool is likely to be divided and explains the reasoning behind it.

It costs $89 AUD as a one-time payment, with no subscription. Both married couples and de facto partners are supported.

Why we built it

When a relationship ends, one of the first and most stressful questions is a financial one: what am I actually entitled to? The honest answer under Australian law is that there is no fixed formula. Outcomes depend on contributions and future needs, and they are decided case by case. That uncertainty is exactly when people feel most in the dark, and often before they are ready to spend hundreds of dollars an hour on a lawyer just to get oriented.

We built Separately to fill that gap. The same structured reasoning a court uses to divide property can be made clear and accessible, so that anyone going through a separation can understand their likely position before they spend on advice. We think people make calmer, better decisions when they can see where they stand.

So Separately gives you a clear, structured starting point: a reasoned estimate you can use to prepare for mediation, to make the most of a first legal consultation, or simply to understand where you stand.

What Separately is not

  • It is not a law firm and it does not provide legal advice. It is general information and a preparation tool.
  • It does not replace a lawyer or a mediator. It is designed to help you prepare for them and get more value from them.
  • It is not a guarantee of any outcome. Property settlements are decided with judicial discretion, so Separately gives a reasoned range, not a single certain number.
  • It does not currently cover parenting arrangements or child support, which are handled separately under Australian law.
