Frequently asked questions

How does Separately help me understand my situation?

Separately provides a secure, guided experience where you can input your relationship details, including financial contributions, caregiving responsibilities, and future needs. It analyses this information to generate a personalised report that outlines a fair settlement assessment, so you can move forward with clarity.

What information do I need to provide to get a report?

You'll need to provide details about the duration of your relationship, assets, debts, income, non-financial contributions like childcare and homemaking, and any other relevant financial information specific to your situation such as inheritances or gifts.

Is my personal and financial information secure with Separately?

Your privacy and security are a top priority. Data you enter is encrypted in transit and at rest and protected with industry-standard security measures, and we never sell your information. No online service can promise absolute security, but we take strong, ongoing steps to keep your personal and financial information confidential. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Can I use the report from Separately as a legal document?

The report generated by Separately is designed to give you a comprehensive overview of your situation and facilitate discussions with your legal counsel. While it is informative and grounded in legal principles, it is not a legal document. For any legal proceedings, we always recommend consulting with a qualified lawyer to ensure that your rights and interests are fully protected.

How accurate is the settlement assessment?

The settlement assessment is based on the information you provide and the general principles of Australian family law. It offers a solid starting point for understanding your position. The final outcome can be influenced by discussions between both parties, mediation, or other factors. We recommend using your assessment as a helpful guide and consulting with a legal professional for personalised advice.

Does Separately take into account the care of children?

Yes, Separately takes the care of children into account. When you provide details about childcare responsibilities, including time spent caring for the children and associated costs, our AI includes this information in the analysis. This ensures that the settlement assessment reflects the needs and contributions related to childcare, providing a fair and comprehensive overview for both parties.

What if our assets are complex, involving trusts or businesses?

Separately is designed to manage complex asset structures, including trusts and businesses. You can input detailed information about these assets into our platform, and our AI will incorporate them into the settlement assessment. However, given the intricacies of such assets, we advise consulting with a legal professional to ensure a thorough and accurate analysis. Our tool provides a strong starting point, but professional advice is essential for navigating complex unique financial situations.

Can I update my information later if something changes?

Yes, you can update your information at any time to reflect changes in your circumstances. Whether there are changes in your financial situation, childcare responsibilities, or any other relevant factors, you can easily modify your inputs. This ensures that the report remains up-to-date and accurately reflects your current situation, providing you with the most relevant and accurate settlement assessment.

How long does it take to complete the input process and receive a report?

Most people take about 30 minutes, depending on how complex your finances are and how readily your information is to hand. You can save and resume at any time, so there is no need to finish in one sitting. Once your data is entered and payment is complete, Separately generates your report instantly.

What kind of support can I expect if I have questions while using Separately?

We offer comprehensive customer support to ensure you have a smooth experience with Separately. If you have any questions or need assistance while using the app, you can contact our support team via email. Our dedicated team will respond promptly to address your concerns and provide the help you need, ensuring you have the support necessary to navigate any issues.

Is this legal advice?

No. Separately is an assessment tool, not a law firm or legal service. Our reports are designed to help you understand the likely range of outcomes based on the information you provide and general principles of Australian family law. They should not be relied upon as legal advice. We strongly recommend consulting a qualified family lawyer before making any decisions about your settlement.

What is your refund policy?

Because your report is generated and delivered instantly, refunds are generally not available once it has been generated. We may refund at our discretion for technical errors, duplicate payments, or where the service was materially different from what was described. Contact support@separately.ai within 14 days of purchase. Australian Consumer Law guarantees still apply. See our Terms of Service for full details.

How do you protect my data?

We take data security seriously. All data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS and encrypted at rest in a secure, access-controlled database. We do not sell your information. To run the service we use trusted providers, including Stripe for payments, MongoDB Atlas for hosting, and OpenAI and Anthropic for the AI-generated narrative parts of your report. This means a pseudonymised version of the information you provide is processed by these providers (some of them in the United States). You can request deletion of your data at any time from your account settings. Please see our Privacy Policy for the full list of providers, what they receive, and how we protect your information.

How much does it cost?

Your full assessment is $89, a one-time payment with no subscription. Initial legal consultations typically range from $300-$600 per hour, so most people use Separately to understand their position before spending on advice. Your report includes a detailed asset division assessment, contribution analysis, and actionable insights you can discuss with a lawyer or mediator.

Does Separately work for de facto relationships?

Yes. Separately is designed for both married and de facto couples. Australian family law applies property settlement principles to de facto relationships that meet the legal criteria, and our free Are We De Facto tool can help you check whether yours likely qualifies.

Does Separately cover parenting arrangements or child support?

Not yet. Separately currently focuses on property settlement: dividing your assets, debts, and superannuation. Parenting arrangements and child support are planned for the future. Caregiving contributions are already factored into your property settlement assessment.

What makes this different from a lawyer?

A lawyer provides personalised legal advice and can represent you in negotiations or court. Separately provides an informed assessment of your likely property settlement based on the information you provide and general principles of Australian family law. Think of it as preparation. Our report helps you understand your position before you invest in legal advice, saving you time and money in those initial consultations.
